ON GOOD WRITING.

It’s true that producing good writing is not easy. But, then again, anything worth your attention is never easy. Some say developing a good writing skill is a lot like the aging process of wine: it gets better with time. We disagree. With wine, all you have to do is sit and wait — the longer, the better. Sitting and waiting will never do anything much for your writing skills, because being a good writer means you have to work at the craftsmanship: repeatedly. So, yes, it’s not easy. But if you try, you will get better at it.

ON CREATING A SAFE SPACE.

Our story began in late 2012, when we opened our first course in front of a dozen or so aspiring writers at the office of The Jakarta Post. It was unnerving for all of us — both the instructors and participants — because writing is such a personal and exclusive experience for any individual. How then would one teach the art and craft of writing? And what is the most effective learning process? Well, that first session changed everything. We learned that in the right learning environment, surrounded by like-minded people who possess the will and passion to write and read better, we are able to create a safe space where we become each other’s most ardent supporter and harshest critic. Every writer needs a safe space. And it is this particular space which we can’t wait to share with you.
